Bryant's brothers?

Postby jbj » Sun Nov 30, 2008 9:48 am

Forgive me if it is posted somewhere on the site and I couldn't find it, but did Bryant Fannon have a brother named John born on July 30, 1779 in Wythe County, VA.? John married Kaziah (Keziah) Stewart around 1801 and I am descended from their son Isaac, his son Joseph L., to his daughter Mary Edith who married a Meade from Kentucky. Mary Edith was my great grandmother. If so, I have information on John's parents and his grandfather I can share. On this line of the family -- Fannon is usually spelled Fannin or Fanning. Thanks....jbj

Hi jbj - find below information from 2 different links that might answer your question and will also give you more information about John. The first link is http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/a/Meredith-P-Leadingham/GENE41-0001.html and covers information about John and his wife Kaziah. I have copy and paste part of it below so please go to the link for the balance of information. This link indicates that John was the son of Bryant who was the son of Achilles. The next link is the abstract of the will of Achilles Fannin http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/wythe/wills/f5500002.txt and his children are listed as William Fannon, Sarah Straighley, Bryant Fannon, David Fannon and Akerless Fannon. Note the 2 spellings of Fannon(in)

Please note that John died in 1853 and that his father Bryant died in 1872. Perhaps the Bryant listed in John's will his is father.

Hope this helps and does not muddy the water
Glenn

1. John6 Fannin (Bryant5, Achilles4 Fanning, Bryan3, Laughlin2 Fannin, Thomas Amis1 Fanning) was born 30 Jul 1779 in Wythe CO., VA., and died 25 Jun 1853 in East Fork, Lawrence CO., KY.. He married Mrs. (Unknown) Keziah Abt. 1801 in VA.. She was born 23 Dec 1783 in Giles Co., VA., and died 31 Oct 1854 in East Fork, Lawrence CO., KY..

JOHN FANNIN WAS BORN IN WYTHE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, ON JULY 30, 1779, AND DIED ON JUNE 25, 1853 IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, KENTUCKY. ACCORDING TO A NEWS PAPER ARTICLE, WRITTEN BY EVELYN SEYPHERS JACKSON, ON JUNE 9, 1977, FOR THE ASHLAND DAILY INDEPENDENT NEWS PAPER, JOHN FANNIN CAME TO BOYD COUNTY, KENTUCKY FROM WYTHE COUNTY, VIRGINIA AROUND 1819 OR 1820. THE ARTICLE WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE AND HIS WIFE, KEZIAH, BORN DECEMBER 23, 1783, AND DIED ON OCTOBER 31, 1854, ARE BURIED IN THE STEWART/FANNIN CEMETERY ON KENTUCKY STATE ROUTE 3, IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, KENTUCKY. SOME FOLKS CALL THIS THE FANNIN-STEWART CEMETERY ON EAST FORK, LAWRENCE COUNTY, KENTUCKY. THE DATES ON HER TOMBSTONE DECEMBER 23, 1783 AND DEATH ON OCTOBER 31, 1854. I FOUND THE STEWART/FANNIN CEMETERY ONE AND HALF MILES SOUTH OF THE BOYD COUNTY LINE INTO LAWRENCE COUNTY ON STATE ROUTE 3. THE CEMETERY IS ON THE RIGHT AT THE TOP OF A STEEP HILL BEHIND A TWO STORY HOUSE THAT SETS ON ROUTE 3. THE FANNIN'S ARE BURIED IN THE FRONT OVER LOOKING ROUTE 3 AND THE STEWARTS ARE IN THE BACK WITH ABOUT 50 GRAVES MARKED BY METAL CROSSES, AND NO NAMES. IT APPEARS TO ME THE FANNIN/STEWART CEMETERY WAS STARTED BY JOHN FANNIN AND IT IS ON HIS FARM BECAUSE ISAAC HIS SON WAS BORN SEP 12, 1808 AND DIED JULY 27, 1845 WAS BURIED THEIR? IT MAY HAVE BEEN STARTED BY BURYING A WILLIAM CLAY FIRST WHO DIED JAN 26, 1842, AND ISAAC IN 1845 AND JOHN, HIS DAD ON JUNE 25, 1853. THESE ARE THE FIRST THREE EARLY MARKED GRAVES. MRS. KEZIAH THE WIFE OF JOHN FANNIN WAS BURIED ON OCT 31, 1854. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THE TWO STORY FARM HOUSE THAT SETS ON STATE ROUTE 3, AND THE CEMETERY ON THE HILL ABOVE THE HOUSE WAS THE ORIGINAL HOMESTEAD OF JOHN AND MRS KEZIAH FANNIN, AS THEY MIGRATED UP FROM WYTHE COUNTY, VA. AROUND 1820. JOHN FANNIN'S TOMBSTONE LISTS HIS DEATH DATE AS JUNE 25, 1853.
HIS WILL DATED JUNE 4, 1853, IS RECORDED IN THE LAWRENCE COUNTY WILL BOOK 1, PAGE 43. THEREIN HE BEQUEATHED PART OF HIS ESTATE TO JOHN FANNIN JR.; BRYANT FANNIN; THE HEIRS OF PHILLIP FANNIN, DECEASED; THE HEIRS OF ISAAC FANNIN, DECEASED; THE HEIRS OF STEPHEN FANNIN, DECEASED; SARAH, THE WIFE OF GEORGE HOWE; ABSOLUM STEWART AND HIS WIFE AMY FANNIN, DAUGHTER OF JOHN FANNIN; THOMAS PITTS AND HIS WIFE MARY.

This is some of the reason I have had to look broadly at the Fannons. They are a very prolific bunch and loved to re-use names. The John D. Fannon (1779-1853) did marry a Kesiah ?. and they did eventually settle in Lawrence Co. KY. His father appears to be Bryant (1754/1757-1830+) and Mary Unk. He is a brother to the Achilles (1735-1812) who is the grandfather of the Bryant married to Abigal Muncy.

The two lines would look like this

John D. Fannon (Bryant, Achilles, Bryan of Amelia Co. Va.)
Bryant Fannon (Achilles, Achilles, Bryan of Amelia Co. Va.)

my line would be
Thomas Ray Fannin (William Warner, John Henry, John J, Travis, David, David, Achilles, Bryan of Amelia Co. Va.)

By the way..... the references to Laughlin2 and Thomas Amis1 have not been substantiated by anyone at this point.

I am descended from Isaac & Sophia Ross Fannin, too. My great grandfather was John D. Fannin, the brother of your Joseph L. Fannin. Please contact me about John & Keziah.

I want to concur with Tom's comment that the parents & grandparents of Bryan Fannin, Sr. of Amelia Co., Va. have not been proven. The claims of Laughlin Fanning being Bryan's father & Thomas Amis Fanning being his grandfather do not withstand scrutiny. I have researched this extensively and have sought repeatedly for documentation of these claims, but I have never received any responses to the inquiries.

I would like to respectfully submit a correction to the statement of dates of Bryant Fannin, father of John Fannin who was born 1779 and died in 1853 that was posted above by Glenn.

John Fannin's dad, Bryant, was born ca. 1755 -1759 and died ca. 1839 in Lawrence Co., Ky. The Bryant Fannin mentioned by Glenn died in Boyd Co., Ky. on November 6,1872. He was the son of John Fannin (1779-1853) & his wife, Keziah Unknown of Lawrence Co., Ky. This Bryant married Polly Smyth, daughter of Amos Smyth. These folks(Bryant & Polly) lived on Garner Creek, Carter Co., Ky. He was known as Col. Bryant Fannin.

Best Regards,

Pat Fannin
